A comprehensive psychological assessment typically consists of a clinical interview and one or more forms of testing. As such, the time required can vary between an hour or two to a full day depending upon the issues being assessed.
Psychological assessments can be completed for a wide variety of reasons. They allow us to develop an understanding of the nature of a problem and guide the treatment of the problem.
For example, if a person is having problems at work or in personal relationships, testing can help determine whether the person might have issues with emotion regulation or interpersonal skills or certain personality traits that contribute to the problem. We then use information gathered from the assessment to determine a specific diagnosis based on the identified symptoms and develop a plan for therapy to treat those issues in order to restore functioning and quality of life for the individual.
